That's neat, Neal. The judicious, selective pruning of a tree to retain its original character in miniature form. How old is this one? I've heard of bonsai that are centuries old. I also understand that some trees are suited to bonsai and some are not so suited. Is it true that one of the measures of success in bonsai is relative success with unsuited species?

Most great minds find completion with a hobby. Or, at least, I like to think so.

My hobby is collecting music on shellac and vinyl. I love roots music (except for polkas) and have a collection of over 200,000 discs. If you like music in (nearly) any genre, let me know what you like...

Yep, that is the essence of bonsai, how a tree would look in nature recreated in miniature form.

I don't really know how old it is. I bought the little juniper in a one gallon pot because I liked the curve at the base of the trunk. I put it into the ground to thicken the trunk up, because what tree in nature has a skinny little trunk when it is centuries old?

It was in the ground for 3 years and I dug it out last year and put it into that pot. I haven't touched it since so that the roots would get established. It seems to have survived the trauma of being dug up and now is ready to be refined, a little pruning here, a little wiring to shape some branches there.

That particular tree is only 18" tall and I had to wire a leader upwards while it was in the ground, as that style of juniper is a ground hugging shrub.

I don't know if the measure of success is the ability to train unsuited species. I know for me success is just keeping one alive for more than a couple years. I do know that there are some plants that are difficult to grow as bonsai, mostly fruiting trees like crab apple, persimmon, and flowering quince.

I have some maples, an elm, a boxwood, an azalea, and a 32" tall Coastal Redwood, plus about a dozen junipers.

You collect music? I have about 450 cd's. I am mostly a 70's rock kind of guy. I have narrowed my listening down to just a few groups now though. Mostly Pink Floyd, Rush, Joe Satriani, Dream Theater, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

I have about 4 days worth of MP3's on my hard drive and I just put Windows Media Player on while I write and keep the volume down so I can concentrate.

Glad you liked the tree. I will update it when it is closer to being what I consider finished.
